Carnival
in Ivrea is famous for its battle of the oranges.
But what happens to the oranges once carnival is
over? Italiaplease has a tasty idea
|
At the beginning of the 19th century,
during the Napoleonic reign, the authorities in
Ivrea, concerned at the amount of fighting that
occurred between the different areas of the town
during Carnival, decided to ban Carnival celebrations
in the separate parts of town. They organised one
central celebration for the whole town which was
co-ordinated by a figure specially appointed by
the French authorities the general of the
carnival.
The result has made Ivrea carnival famous
to this day: the battle of the oranges. The battle
takes place between orange-throwers on the ground,
who represent the revolutionaries, and orange-throwers
who move through the town on horse-drawn carts,
a reminder of the ruling classes of the time. Protective
wiring is put up for the public although their safety
is not guaranteed unless they wear a special red
cap, not unlike the headwear used during the French
revolution. Anyone foolhardy enough to venture out
without their hat is a fair target for the orange-throwers
all under the generals orders of course.
However once carnival is over there is a huge orange
mountain left to rot in Ivrea. ItaliaPlease
has the answer. Lets make the mountain in
mouth-watering orange slices.
Oranges are used both in sweet and savoury dishes.
The best oranges traditionally come from Sicily.

Orange Slices
|
Ingredients
150 g of puff pastry
100 g of confectioner's cream
30 cc of Cointreau or another similar
orange liqueur
200g of peeled, thinly sliced oranges
Caster sugar
Method
Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Roll the
pastry out evenly until it is fairly thin.
Prick it all over with a fork and leave it
aside in a cool place for 20 minutes. Bake
the pastry in the oven for 10 minutes, cool
then sprinkle with the sugar. Put it back
into the oven until the sugar melts and caramelises.
Cool and cut into two pieces. Stir the Cointreau
into the confectioners cream and spread
over one half. Cover with the orange slices
and place the other half on top. Sprinkle
more sugar on top and cut into squares.
Buon appetito! |
We
recommend you use Sicilian oranges for these delicious
pastries.
