Vincenzo Foppa Museo della Città, Santa Giulia, Brescia From March 3rd to June 2nd, 2002 The first ever major exhibition of Foppa's work. A collection of more than 110 paintings by this Renaissance artist shown alongside works by other important artists of the period including Donatello and Mantegna. Don't miss the section dedicated to Brescia in the mid 1400s. Ashes and snow Arsenale, Venice From April 7th, 2002 The delicate relationship between man and nature is explored in this evocative exhibition by the Canadian photographer Gregory Colbert. The photos were taken over a ten-year period with particular emphasis on the magical universe of elephants - "nature's living masterpieces" in Colbert's words. Piazza Dante Metro Station Naples From March 27th, 2002 The art scene in Naples goes (literally) underground with the opening of Piazza Dante metro station. The station was designed by the renowned architect Gae Aulenti and provides an exciting new space for both Italian and international contemporary art. Piazza Dante is the fourth metro station in Naples to become an active exhibition space (Cilea, Salvator Rosa and Museo opened their doors to art in April 2001). In the words of Gae Aulenti: "it's a way to get to people in direct contact with art, avoiding the psychological barrier that is often created by a museum." Giotto's Crucifix and Masaccio's Trinity Florence From April 11th These two masterpieces are now on show once more in Florence's Basilica di Santa Maria Novella after extensive restoration. Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel reopens Padua From March 25th, 2002 Giotto's newly restored masterpiece reopens to the public on the same day (March 25th) that his patron Enrico Scrovegni opened the frescoed chapel in 1305. Advance booking is advisable as only a limited number of visitors will be admitted to the chapel in order to protect the frescoes. And remember, up until February 17th you can still book a guided tour of the frescoes during restoration. Genoese Painting from the Hermitage - from Luca Cambiaso to Magnasco Palazzo Ducale, Genoa From March 15th, 2002 The Doges' Apartments in Genoa's magnificent Palazzo Ducale are the setting for an exhibition which traces the relationship between Genoa and St. Petersburg during the 18th Century through a series of well-known masterpieces. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Mazzotta Foundation, Milan From February 23rd to June 9th, 2002 Paintings by one of the most important German artists of the 20th century. From Puvis de Chavannes to Matisse and Picasso Palazzo Grassi, Venice From February 10th to June 16th, 2002 An unusual selection of 200 works which takes us from the works of the often neglected post-impressionist Puvis de Chavannes to Gauguin towards modern art. Themes and variations: Post-war Art Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, Venice Until August 4th, 2002 Paintings, sculptures and drawings from the Guggenheim Collections in Venice and New York. The Leaning Tower reopens Pisa's famous tower reopens to the public after 12 years of work. Visits will be limited to 25 people at a time for a maximum of 30 minutes per visit. For 15 Euros visitors can climb to the top of the Tower, or rather to the railings overlooking the belfry, while they'll no longer be able to walk around the picturesque arcades.
